BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Katie Long recorded 24 kills for the Bridgewater College volleyball team on Sunday in Nininger Hall. The Cougars of Averett University defeated the Eagles 3-2 during the non-conference Dig Pink match.
Bridgewater holds a record of 7-10 overall and 5-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Averett advances to an overall record of 12-6.
Senior Bethany Doman preformed a double-double for the afternoon with 18 kills and 14 digs. Doman as well as Megann Grimes both added two blocks. Grimes also recorded three service aces for the Eagles.
Lindsay Kallam put up 24 assists, while teammate Lauren Johnson chipped in 22, respectively.
Casey O'Leary led the back row with 27 digs and Kallam added 13.
For the Cougars, Allison Sparks recorded a double-double, while setter Allison Sparks contributed 44 assists. Libero Paige Aaron chipped in 19 digs for the win.
Bridgewater looked strong coming out into the first set with Long and Grimes recording two kills and a double block making the score 5-2. A kill from Sparks tied the game at 7-7, which made the set a two point rallying game until the end of the set. The Eagles took the first set with a block from Doman and Cadie Castle making the final score 30-28.
The second set of the day, the Eagles took the lead early making the score 6-2. Averett turned the lead around with a seven point run pulling ahead of Bridgewater 11-8. The Cougars kept the lead with kill after kill from the front row resulting in a 25-14 win.
Bridgewater was able to tie up the third set early 5-5 with a kill from Long. A back-and-fourth rally ended with a six point run by the Eagles. After two attack errors by Averett and a kill from Doman, Bridgewater won the set 25-19.
The fourth set was a rally of two points until the 19-15 mark when Bridgewater called a timeout. Averett came out with three more points after the timeout pushing Averett to sweep the game 25-16.
The final set of the afternoon was neck-and-neck all the way until the end where the Cougars took the set and match with a final score of 20-18.
Bridgewater heads on the road Friday where the team travels to Towson, Md. for the Goucher Tournament. The Eagles starts off the weekend against the host school at 4 pm and then takes on The City College of New York at 6 pm on October 5th.
