BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The 10th-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University remained unscathed on the year behind two first half goals and a three-goal second frame as the Captains defeated Bridgewater College, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
The loss ends Bridgewater's five-game winning streak and hands the Eagles their first loss in the month of October.
Christopher Newport (15-0) got on the board in the sixth minute when Kelsey Clark scored off of a rebound to build a 1-0 Captains advantage.
At the 11:44 mark, CNU extended its lead when Shelby Judkins scored her first of two goals on the day to run the Captains' lead to 2-0 at the break.
Belle Tunstall scored 21 seconds into the second half to add an insurance and push the CNU lead to 3-0 before Judkins added her second goal at the 49:59 mark to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the 59th minute, Sarah Smith took a Tunstall pass and beat the keeper to finalize the scoring, handing the Captains a 5-0 victory.
Four Bridgewater (10-4) players tallied a shot each in the loss as the Captains owned a 29-4 advantage in shots.
Senior Jessica Balsano picked up the loss after making a season-high 16 saves over the first 63:49 of the game. Freshman Brianna Bashore finished the final six-plus minutes of the game between the pipes.
Judkins led the Captains offensively, while Bailey Lien made two saves to pick up the win in the cage for CNU.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday at home against conference-leading Lynchburg. Start time against the Hornets is set for 1 p.m.
