Field Hockey Takes Down Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team tallied two goals in the opening eight minutes to build out an early lead and never looked back in a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory on Saturday afternoon at Virginia Wesleyan.

Bridgewater (7-3, 1-1 ODAC) got on the board just 2:33 into the contest when sophomore Taylor Prillaman took a pass from junior Caroline Augsburger and beat the keeper to put the Eagles out in front, 1-0.

Less than five minutes later, the Eagles added an insurance goal. Senior Megan Gould received a pass from Prillaman and fired a shot from the left side into the back of the net to extend the Bridgewater lead to 2-0 at the 7:12 mark of the game.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-3, 2-2 ODAC) went on the offensive in the middle part of the first half before finally breaking through in the 27th minute. Sam Jackson stroked a shot into the back of the net from the left side to trim the Bridgewater lead to 2-1 at the break.

Bridgewater outshot the Marlins by a 9-5 margin over the opening 35 minutes of play and owned a decisive 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Out of the halftime break, the Eagles added to their lead early in the final frame. Sophomore Rachael Loy took a pass form Jennifer Tompkins and found the back of the net to extend the lead to 3-1, which is how the contest would end.

The Eagles owned a 14-8 advantage in shots in the game and finished with a 16-10 lead in penalty corners.

Prillaman led the Eagles with six shots on the afternoon, while Augsburger chipped in five in the win.

Senior Jessica Balsano made one save in the game to earn her seventh victory of the year.

Taylor Marshall and Taylor Lober each tallied two shots in the loss, while Lindsay Baker made seven saves in the loss.

Bridgewater is back in action on Friday evening at Roanoke. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
