Box Score DANVILLE, Va. - The Averett Cougars handed Bridgewater College its third straight loss with a 2-1 victory over the Eagles in women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars hit the Eagles with a goal in the first three minutes of second-half action. Felicia Pajamaki scored on a corner kick to give Averett a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars padded the margin with a goal in the 64th minute. Sandra Johansson took a through ball from Charlotte Thibault and slipped her shot past Eagles keeper Taylor Riley for a 2-0 Averett lead.
The Eagles fought back and pulled to within a single goal when Melanie Waters scored in the 73rd minute.
Down the stretch the Averett defense held the Eagles attack at bay to secure the 2-1 non-conference victory.
The Eagles held a 15-12 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Riley recorded six saves for the Eagles while Malin Borjesson recorded nine saves for the Cougars.
Bridgewater will try to get back on the winning track Saturday when the Eagles open conference play with a road trip to Emory & Henry. Game time is 6 p.m.
