Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater men's soccer team turned in a solid performance Tuesday as the Eagles battled McDaniel to a 0-0 tie in double overtime.
McDaniel entered the contest with a 5-0 record and was ranked No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic region poll released a week ago by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Green Terror kept the pressure on the Eagles early in the game but the Bridgewater defense was up to the task. McDaniel held an 8-3 edge in shots in the first half, but Bridgewater keeper Kevin Morris came away with three saves to keep the contest even.
The Eagles had a chance to take the lead late in the first half when Ben Lewis was one-on one with the keeper. Lewis tried to push his shot past the McDaniel keeper, but Zach Nibbelink made a dive for the ball and was able to push it just wide of the far post.
Each team made some strong offensive runs in the second half, but both defenses were able to stand firm.
McDaniel had its best chance to end the game midway through the first overtime when Luis Calderon whistled a pair of shots from close range at the Bridgewater goal. Morris made a diving save of Calderon's first shot, but the ball rebounded back to the Green Terror forward. Calderon then tried to beat Morris to the near post, but Morris made another diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
McDaniel finished with a 22-7 edge in shots and a narrow 10-8 advantage in corner kicks.
Nibbelink finished the contest with two saves while Morris turned in a sterling performance with nine saves.
The Eagles, now 3-3-1 overall, return to action Sunday afternoon and open conference play when they host Washington and Lee. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
