Mary Washington Downs Cold-Shooting Eagles

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After a strong first-half performance, the Bridgewater College Eagles went cold from the floor in the second half and the result was a 70-50 victory for the University of Mary Washington in non-conference women's basketball action Monday evening.

The visitors jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead and the lead grew to 18-9 with 13:35 left in the opening half. Bridgewater then put together an 11-2 run to tie the score at the 9:54 mark.

Holly Morgan started the run with a jumper and Cassidy Burkholder added 1-of-2 at the foul line. A layup by Heather Cantrell trimmed the margin to four before a layup by Brianne Comden gave Mary Washington a 20-14 lead. Two free throws by Burkholder and a layup by Rebecca Reifsnider cut the deficit to two before Cantrell worked inside for a bucket to tie the score at 20-20.

Mary Washington (8-3) regained the lead on two foul shots by Erin Drumheller and the visitors methodically padded the lead to nine, 37-28, with 1:57 left in the half.

Bridgewater scored the final seven points of the half to trail by just two at the break. A three-point play by Burkholder and a layup by Gabrielle Spinner made the score 37-33. Cantrell added two foul shots with two seconds left on the clock, making the halftime score 37-35.

The Eagles tied the score three times early in the second half at 37-37, 39-39 and 41-41.

Mary Washington led 42-41 on a free throw by Sam Partonen and a layup by Sarah Listenbee pushed the lead to three. A layup by Cantrell pulled Bridgewater to within a single point, before a three-point play by Aby Diop gave the visitors a 47-43 lead. Cantrell knocked down a jumper to make it 47-45 with 12:39 left in the game and then the Eagles went ice cold from the floor.

Mary Washington outscored the Eagles 23-5 the rest of the way to pull away for the final 70-50 victory.

Cantrell scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Bridgewater offense and Burkholder added 14. Aubrey Howland led the winners with 18 points, followed by Diop with 13 and Comden with 11.

Mary Washington held a 40-29 margin on the boards with Comden's seven boards leading the team. Cantrell pulled down seven rebounds and Burkholder added six for Bridgewater.

The loss was the sixth straight for Bridgewater as the Eagles dropped to 2-8 on the season.

Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday when the team travels to Staunton to meet Mary Baldwin College.
