Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee scored the game's only goal midway through the second half Wednesday afternoon to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 1-0, in a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer contest.
The teams entered the contest tied for second place in the ODAC standings. The Generals are now 11-1-1 overall and 9-1 in the ODAC while the Eagles drop to 13-3 and 8-2 in conference play. W&L's victory also snapped Bridgewater's nine-game winning streak and the second-half goal was the first scored against the Eagles in 872 minutes of play.
The Generals came out of the gate strong and peppered the Eagles defense with seven shots and two corner kick opportunities in the opening eight minutes.
Bridgewater weathered the early barrage of shots and the action settled into an evenly contested matchup the rest of the way.
W&L scored the only goal it needed in the 73rd minute when midfielder Lauren Abraham netted an unassisted goal for a 1-0 Generals lead.
The Eagles managed two shots in the final 10 minutes of the game, but attempts by Michelle Viegas and Sarah Brennan sailed wide.
The Generals held an 18-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Keri Rager and Ashley Crossman each had a shot on goal for the Eagles.
Bridgewater goalkeeper Krista Kelly finished the contest with nine saves while W&L keeper Addie Healey recorded two saves.
The Eagles will look to get back on the winning track Saturday afternoon when they travel to play Sweet Briar College in ODAC action. Bridgewater returns home Sunday afternoon for a non-conference game with Salem College.
