Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's soccer team shut out Sweet Briar, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The victory was the 14th of the season for the Eagles, setting a new program record for victories in a season.
The Eagles were involved in a scoreless duel with the Vixens for most of the first half. Bridgewater finally broke the ice in the 37th minute when Mari Marotta found the back of the net after taking a long pass from Nikole Blackwell. The goal was Marotta's second of the year.
Bridgewater carried the 1-0 lead into the break and then added an insurance goal early in the second half. Michelle Viegas got free on a breakaway for the Eagles and her initial shot was saved by Sweet Briar keeper Kat Day. Viegas was in position to clean up the rebound and she slotted her shot past the keeper to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles dominated the stats with a 21-1 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Krista Kelly played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles and faced just the one shot that sailed wide of the goal. Day recorded 12 saves for Vixens.
The Eagles are now 14-3 overall and 9-2 in the ODAC. Sweet Briar drops to 6-8 overall and 3-8 in the conference.
Bridgewater is back in action Sunday afternoon when the Eagles host Salem College in a non-conference matchup. Game time is 2 p.m.
