Guilford Defeats Eagles In ODAC Opener

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford used a hot-shooting first half from beyond the arc to open up a double-digit lead and the Quakers pulled away in the second half to defeat Bridgewater College, 77-50, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action Tuesday evening.

Turnovers plagued the Eagles early in the first half as the Quakers jumped out to a quick 9-2 advantage.

After the Eagles closed the gap to four on a three-point play by Oshene Kelly, Guilford reeled off eight unanswered points to push the lead to double digits at 17-5.

The Quakers (4-1, 1-0 in the ODAC) led by as many as 16 points, 31-15 with 5:15 left in the halt. The Eagles then outscored Guilford 12-7 over the final five minutes to trim the margin to 38-27 at the break.

Guilford padded its margin in the first 20 minutes with some uncanny shooting from beyond the arc as the Quakers hit 4-of-6 3-pointers.

The Quakers quickly expanded its halftime lead to 16 points before a 3-pointer by Jessi Strom and a three-point play by Cassidy Burkholder cut the margin to 10 points with 16:43 left in the game.

Bridgewater had two trips with a chance to get the deficit to single digits but a missed jumper and a turnover kept the margin at 10 points.

The Eagles were still within striking distance when Jessica Lam made 1-of-2 foul shots to pull the Eagles within 12 points, 55-43 with nine minutes left to play.

The Quakers then scored six straight points to lead by 18 and  pulled away for the final margin of victory.
