BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College junior Julia Baca scored three goals in the second half Wednesday afternoon to lead the Eagles to a 4-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over Averett University.
Baca's outburst helped the Eagles overcome a lackluster first half as the winless Cougars played on even terms with Bridgewater. The Eagles held a slim 6-3 edge in shots in a scoreless first half and corner kicks were even at three each.
The second half, however, was a different story as the Eagles applied heavy pressure against the Averett defense and the goals eventually came and, they came in bunches.
Baca tallied her hat trick during a 12-minute span. Her first goal came in the 52nd minute when she took a through ball from Michelle Viegas and scored from 12 yards out on the right side, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Baca scored again in the 60th minute, taking a pass across the box from Keri Rager and slipping her shot past the keeper for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.
Baca and Rager combined again less than four minutes later as Rager's pass into the box found Baca right in front of the goal and she blasted her shot past the keeper, making the score 3-0.
The Eagles scored their final goal in the 75th minute when Kelly Patterson got behind the Averett defense and slid a perfect pass to Sarah Brennan for an easy goal and the final 4-0 margin of victory. The goal was the third of the season for Brennan.
Krista Kelly and Hayley Talbott combined for the shutout, Bridgewater's fourth in five contests. Kelly played the first 74 minutes and recorded two saves. Talbott finished up and turned away one shot.
Bridgewater outshot the Cougars 16-3 in the second half to finish with a 22-6 edge in shots. Bridgewater also held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Eagles, now 4-1 on the season, face a big test Saturday when they host Old Dominion Athletic Conference favorite Lynchburg College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
