BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Caroline Augsburger netted a second-half goal for the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles fell by a 3-1 tally to the Dickinson Red Devils on Saturday afternoon at the Jopson Athletic Complex.

Bridgewater (2-3) had numerous opportunities in the early part of the contest against a Dickinson squad that received votes in the most recent National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll. The Eagles earned a corner late in the seventh minute and fired a barrage of shots at the Dickinson goal. Augsburger fired two shots and sophomore Shannon Strosser fired off another but Red Devils netminder Emily Fuss was up to the task, keeping the game scoreless.

The tide shifted in the favor of Dickinson (5-1) late in the first half before the Red Devils broke through in the waning minutes of the frame. Alyssa Stillwell trickled a shot at the cage and junior Caroline Fletcher made a defensive save at the line to keep the game scoreless but Amber Dey sprinted in and fired the ball into the cage for a 1-0 Dickinson lead with less than four minutes to go in the first.

At the 33:37 mark, Catherine Perlmutter fired a shot at Bridgewater goalie Amanda Harper and the freshman turned the shot away but Stillwell was there for the rebound and her shot handed the Red Devils a 2-0 halftime lead.

Despite the two-goal differential, the shots total was identical with seven shots for each team in the first 35 minutes.

Perlmutter added an insurance tally for the Red Devils in the middle part of the second half on a reverse chip as Dickinson looked to run away with the contest, but Bridgewater wouldn't go away empty handed.

The Eagles earned a corner at the 65:02 mark and Augsburger ripped a shot from the point and put Bridgewater on the board but it wasn't enough as the Red Devils rode off with a 3-1 win.

Augsburger led the Eagles with seven shots on the day as Bridgewater outshot the Red Devils by an 18-13 margin. Bridgewater also owned a 16-4 advantage in corners, but the Eagles struggled to convert numerous opportunities.

Harper made five saves in the loss.

Three different players scored goals for Dickinson with Stillwell's six shots leading the way.

Fuss turned away nine Bridgewater shots to earn her fifth victory of the season.

Bridgewater returns to action on Wednesday against Juniata. Start time from the Jopson Athletic Complex is set for 7 p.m.
