BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Keri Rager scored two goals in the first half and Julia Baca added a hat trick in the second half to lead Bridgewater College to an 8-0 victory Saturday afternoon over Emory & Henry College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer contest.
The victory was the fourth in a row for the Eagles, now 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC. The Wasps slipped to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
After 20 minutes of scoreless action, Rager scored both of her goals in less than a minute. The first goal came when Michelle Viegas slipped a through ball behind the Wasps defense and Rager won the one-on-one battle with E&H keeper Vicki Fenley to put the Eagles on the scoreboard at the 20:41 mark.
Just 57 seconds later, Rager cleaned up a loose ball in the box and found the back of the net, making the score 2-0.
The Eagles added to its lead in the 34th minute when Kelly Patterson took a pass from Ali Shaffer and slipped the shot past the keeper, putting the Eagles on top 3-0.
Bridgewater kept constant pressure on the E&H defense in the opening half in building its 3-0 lead. The Eagles held a 19-1 edge in shots and took eight corner kicks.
Baca controlled play early in the second half, scoring her hat trick in the first 12 minutes of action.
Baca's first score came when she beat a defender for possession and carried the ball toward the box. She hit her shot with the left foot and snuck the ball just inside the far post, making the score 4-0.
The Eagles made it 5-0 at the 53:45 mark when Ashley Crossman sent a pass into the box from the left side and Baca converted the shot for her second goal.
Three minutes later, Bridgewater tallied once gain. Rager took a shot from right side that deflected off the hand of the Wasps keeper, The ball went right to Baca who booted the ball into the open goal, completed the hat trick and giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
Bridgewater scored off a set piece in the 68th minute to pad its lead. Viegas sent a corner kick to the back post where Katherine Wight was in perfect position for the shot. The Eagles freshman didn't miss as her goal gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
The final score of the game came on an E&H own goal when a Bridgewater cross into the box deflected off a Wasps defender and rolled into the goal.
The Eagles finished with a 35-4 edge in shots and a 15-1 advantage in corner kicks. Rager and Baca took eight shots each to spearhead the offensive attack.
Three different keepers saw action for the Eagles and combined for the shutout. Krista Kelly played the first half and recorded one save. Hayley Talbott played the first 39 minutes of the second half and Haley Carter finished up with six minutes of action. Carter added one save. E&H keeper Fenley finished the contest with 10 saves.
Bridgewater will be on the road in the coming week for a pair of ODAC contests. On Wednesday the Eagles travel to Ashland, Va., to face Randolph-Macon College. The Eagles make the long trip to Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday for a date with the Guilford College Quakers.
