Volleyball Wraps Up Day 2 at Johns Hopkins Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Eagles end their tournament weekend with a 3-0 defeat over Goucher and a 3-0 loss against Stevenson.

In the first match of the day, the Bridgewater College volleyball team won its first set 25-19 but Goucher came out fighting in the second set. Both teams had 12 kills for the set but two errors committed by the Gophers would earn the Eagles a 32-30 victory. The final set of the match saw Bridgewater run away with a 25-13 triumph for its first win of the tournament.

On the offense, Megann Grimes led with 14 kills for the match. Teammate Abby Mills chipped in nine kills of her own, with Rachel Kinsey adding four. Bailey Long and Kristen Trice would further help the offensive line with three kills apiece. Courtney Thornburg led a strong defense with 13 digs while Mills added eight. Shannon Skellchock notched 28 assists for the match.

Michelle Tweedie led Goucher's offense with 12 kills with Hannah Kuehl adding four of her own. Sarah Johnson led defense with 10 digs and 21 assists.

The Eagles' final match of the day saw Stevenson win all three sets, 25-18, 25-16, and 25-15. The Mustangs started the first set strong, collecting a total of 16 kills. Stevenson kept up the pace for the second and third sets to claim victory over the Eagles.   

Mills had eight kills for the match while Grimes and Kinsey added two apiece. Nikki Snyder collected 12 digs to lead the defense. Carleigh Studtmann and Skellchock chipped in seven digs each with Skellchock tallying 15 assists for the match.

The Mustangs offense was led by Annika Schwartz who collected 17 kills and had three service aces. Sarah Bollinger tallied 25 assists while Samantha Perillo led the defense with 10 digs.

The Eagles return home next weekend for the Bridgewater College Invitational where they will face Averett University Friday evening at 8 p.m., followed by matches against N.C. Wesleyan College and Gaulladet University on Saturday.
