Yellow Jackets Wear Down Eagles In Second Half

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon controlled play in the second half Wednesday evening and pulled away for a 63-45 victory over Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball action.

The loss was the second straight of the New Year for Bridgewater and the first of the season in conference play. The Eagles are now 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC.

Randolph-Macon, ranked No. 16 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, improved to 10-2 overall and remained perfect in the ODAC at 3-0.

The Eagles failed to score in the first 3:30 of play, but then used a 10-0 run to lead 10-3.

Ed Reddick put the Eagles on the board with a layup and an inside move by Aaron and Adams gave Bridgewater a 4-3 lead. Kyle Welty knocked down a jumper and Adams scored again to make it 8-3. Keonte Dennis came off the bench and swished a 12-footer to put the Eagles on top 10-3.

Most of Randolph-Macon's offense came from sharpshooter Clay Hamilton as he connected on 4-of-7 shots from 3-point range and scored half of the Yellow Jackets 28 points in the first half.

The Eagles took their biggest lead of the first half, 16-7, on a reverse layup by Welty, but the Yellow Jackets rattled off 10 straight points to surge ahead. Hamilton hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run and his 3-ball with 7:36 on the clock gave the hosts a 17-16 lead.

The lead changed hands five times with a layup by Matthew Hunter putting the Eagles up by a point, 22-21. Zach Hunter then connected from long range to put the Eagles on top 25-21.

Randolph-Macon responded with a 7-0 spurt over the final three minutes of the first half to lead 28-25 at the break.

Bridgewater opened the second half with a bucket by Welty to pull within one, but then the Eagles went stone cold from the floor scoring just one more bucket over the next seven minutes as the Yellow Jackets opened up a 37-29 lead.

Randolph-Macon continued to pull away and led by 20 points, 51-31, with 8:55 left in the game.

Bridgewater then responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to 12. Dennis and Reddick scored from down low and Welty added a driving layup, making the score 51-37. Adams then scored from the paint cutting the margin to 12 points with seven minutes left to play.

The Eagles, however, would get no closer as the Yellow Jackets finished off the 63-45 victory.

Welty was the lone Bridgewater player in double figures with 14 points. Reddick was held to a season-low nine. Hamilton finished with 22 points and was the only Macon player to reach double digits.

The key to the contest was on the boards where the Yellow Jackets dominated by a 54-39 margin with 20 of those rebounds at the offensive end.

The Eagles return to action Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. when they host Hampden-Sydney College.
