Field Hockey Pulls Off Big Comeback Win at Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. –
The Bridgewater College field hockey team completed a thrilling comeback on the road Saturday, scoring three times late to defeat Roanoke 3-2.

With 3:21 remaining, Elizabeth Washington took a Caroline Fletcher pass and finished off what would be the final shot of the game as Bridgewater kept pace at the top of the ODAC standings.

With injuries hitting the Eagles' goalkeeping corps, Bridgewater was forced to move junior Marisa Sims into the cage as an emergency option. She came up big, making seven saves and earning the victory.

Down 2-0 with under 18 minutes to play, Bridgewater tied things up in the span of less than four minutes.

Rachael Loy played a penalty corner to Taylor Prillaman, who fed Allison Kirk to get Bridgewater on the board. On the next shot of the contest, Alenka Ferrufino took a Prillaman pass and slipped it inside the right post to even the score.

Roanoke had taken a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute, on a goal from Megan Diehl.

The Eagles earned a penalty corner three minutes into a scoreless first half. Prillaman's shot off Washington's pass was saved by Roanoke goalie Heather Schauder.

Sims made her first save in the 22nd minute, blocking a shot by Rebecca Schmidt, who had just subbed in moments before. The Maroons were given a corner, and Sims came up with another stop on Shelbi Holloman.

Prillaman slipped a shot past Schauder late in the first half, but Roanoke's Arielle Allam made a defensive save to keep the contest scoreless. The Eagles were given a penalty corner, and Prillaman's slap shot went just over the cage.

Sims came up huge after halftime with four saves in the opening 3:33 of the second half. The final shot of that sequence rebounded right to Holloman for the goal however.

The Eagles improve to 8-7 and 4-1 in ODAC play. They are in a four-way pack of teams with one conference loss, along with Shenandoah, Washington & Lee and Lynchburg. Bridgewater will close the regular season by facing Shenandoah and Washington & Lee in an upcoming week that will be crucial for playoff seeding.
