BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College took a six-point lead at halftime Wednesday evening and never trailed In the second half as the Eagles defeated Eastern Mennonite, 69-63, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball action at Nininger Hall.
The victory snapped the Eagles four-game losing streak. Bridgewater is now 11-13 overall and 6-9 in the ODAC. EMU drops to 15-9, 8-7 in the conference.
Two foul shots by Marcel Crump pulled EMU to within two late in the first half, but a layup and two free throws by Aaron Adams sent the Eagles to the break with a 34-28 lead.
The Royals scored the first five points of the second half to pull within a point, but a layup by Ed Reddick gave Bridgewater a three-point, 36-33, lead.
The teams traded points until the Royals finally pulled even when Ryan Yates hit 1-of-2 foul shots to tie the score at 40-40 with 14:14 left to play.
Kyle Welty scored on a driving layup for a 42-40 Bridgewater lead with 13:44 left and the Eagles led for the next 10 minutes.
After a dunk by David Falk pulled EMU to within 46-45, Marcus Curry hit a 17-footer and Logan Seacrist scored from inside to push the Eagles advantage back to five, 50-45, with 9:23 left.
A layup by Ryan Yates and another dunk by Falk once again made it a one-point game, but two foul shots by Curry pushed the lead to three, 52-49.
The Royals kept the pressure on the Eagles and EMU finally pulled even again at 59-59 when Jerome Jones knocked down a 3-ball from the right wing with 3:50 left.
EMU called a quick timeout after the Jones three and the Eagles came out of the timeout and regained the lead on a Keonte Dennis 15-footer.
Crump missed a 3-pointer on the EMU's next possession and Welty grabbed the long rebound for the Eagles. Welty hit Reddick with a perfect bounce pass on the break and Reddick threw down a right-handed dunk, giving the Eagles a 63-59 lead with 3:00 minutes remaining.
Jones knocked down another 3-pointer to pull EMU back to within one, but Welty responded with a floater in the lane for a three-point, 65-62, Eagles lead with 2:06 on the clock.
A free throw by Falk cut the Eagles lead to two with 1:01 left and a Bridgewater turnover gave the ball back to the Royals. Yates missed an opportunity to give EMU the lead with a 3-pointer from the left corner with 19 seconds left. His shot was short and Adams grabbed the rebound for the Eagles and was immediately fouled with 15 seconds remaining.
Adams missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Reddick grabbed a key offensive rebound. EMU was forced to foul and Zach Hunter went to the line and made two free throws with 12 seconds left, making the score 67-63. Hunter tacked on two more free throws with 1.7 seconds left for the final 69-63 margin of victory.
Reddick and Welty each scored 17 points to lead the Bridgewater offense. Crump with 17 points and Falk with 13 paced the Royals. Bridgewater controlled the boards by a 46-33 margin. Welty grabbed nine boards and Reddick added eight. Adams and Curry added seven rebounds each for the Eagles. Falk, the ODAC's leading rebounder, led the Royals with eight boards.
Bridgewater closes out its regular season Saturday when the Eagles host Lynchburg College.
