BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team recorded its first shutout in almost six years, blanking Hollins University 16-0 on Saturday at Jopson Field.
Sophomore goalie Rachel Gruber saved all five shots on target for her first career shutout, as the Eagles kept an opponent scoreless for the first time since a 20-0 win over Hollins on Apr. 14, 2009. BC had two shutouts that year, also defeating Trinity Washington 13-0 a week earlier.
The Eagles had 12 different scorers, including hat tricks by juniors Jesse Colligan and Caroline Fletcher.
Bridgewater led 3-0 in the opening two minutes. Meredith Wimbrow opened the scoring and senior Paige Hennessy assisted on consecutive tallies from Annie Sullivan and Caroline Fletcher.
Jenna Devilbiss followed, and Erica Blubaugh assisted Brittney Brown for a 5-0 lead.
Hennessy scored in the ninth minute of play for an 8-0 advantage, and Fletcher made it 9-0 after less than 13 minutes gone- tipping a Devilbiss pass into the cage.
From the 11-minute mark of the first half, the Eagles held possession for nearly 10 minutes straight, with the exception of one seven-second span. Christina Havrila caused a turnover for Hollins but Bonnie Jo Blevins gave it away on the clear, with Colligan picking up the ground ball. Colligan would score in the final minute for an 11-0 halftime scoreline.
After making just one save in the first half, Hollins goalie Emily Lowther stopped the first three shots she saw in the second period. She would finish with seven saves total.
Kayla Strothers scored her second goal of the season in the second half. Lakin Engman added her second of the year following a goal from Brittany Lanahan, pushing Bridgewater's lead to 14-0.
BC leading scorer Palermo-Re finished with four assists on the day, finally scoring her lone goal with 12:45 to go- the 11th different Bridgewater scorer on the day.
Blubaugh capped things with exactly eight minutes remaining, recording her first career goal in the freshman's third game back from injury.
Bridgewater outshot their opponents 30-6, and holding Hollins to just five successful clears on 18 attempts. Hennessy and Devilbiss led the defense with two caused turnovers each, while Colligan added four ground balls and four draw controls.
The Eagles had recorded goals from 16 different players in a win over Elms earlier in the season. Strothers scored her first collegiate goal in that contest and added her second today.
The Eagles held their Pink Game for breast cancer awareness, wearing t-shirts in warmups and also selling them- with all proceeds going towards to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Bridgewater improves to 6-7, 3-4 ODAC and faces another big conference test at home on Wednesday vs. Shenandoah. Hollins falls to 0-11, 0-8.
