Eagles Shut Down Ferrum in 5-0 Victory

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. –
The Bridgewater College field hockey team out-shot Ferrum 41-0 on Thursday evening, defeating the Panthers 5-0 at Jopson Field.

Seniors Taylor Prillaman and Caroline Fletcher scored twice each for the Eagles, while classmate Rachael Loy recorded two assists.

Bridgewater shut down their opponents in every offensive statistic, holding a 22-0 advantage in shots on goal and a 12-0 edge on penalty corners. Panthers goalie Courtney Gosslin did her part to keep the score down, making 17 saves on the evening.

After some early frustrations, the Eagles finally got on the board in the 15th minute of play. Shannon Strosser ran down a Loy pass towards the right post, tapping it in by the endline for a 1-0 lead.

Fletcher made it 2-0 at the exact midpoint of the first half, stealing possession back and then ripping it in from outside.

Prillaman stuffed in a shot at the right doorstep, off an assist from freshman Valerie Fazio, to put BC up 3-0 midway through the second half.

The Eagles' final two tallies came on penalty corners, with Prillaman finishing from outside center off a pass from Loy, and Fletcher scoring from a similar position directly off Elizabeth Washington's insert.

Bridgewater outshot the Panthers 20-0 in the first half, and held a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal.

At least two of those eight first half saves from Gosslin were noteworthy, with the Ferrum goaltender making a good blocker save on Loy early, and then a tough stop on Prillaman's slap shot later in the period.

The Eagles were all over Ferrum early but didn't score. Katie Ellis had a shot off the game's opening corner blocked, and Allison Kirk then redirected Loy's shot off the post.

After Strosser had opened the scoring, Prillaman took a pass all alone in front of the cage but couldn't stuff the chance past Gosslin.

It was more of the same in the second half, with Gosslin making a nice kick save on Washington's long range shot early in the period.

Gosslin soon denied Alenka Ferrufino and Marisa Sims seconds apart, followed by Loy slipping a shot just wide.

Midway through the second, Loy dove to try and redirect a pass at the right post. She made contact but the shot was just wide. Gosslin added two more tough stops on Strosser and Prillaman before the Eagles tacked on their final two goals of the night.

BC (1-5) will be on the road Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at St. Mary's (Md.). Ferrum falls to 1-4 on the year.
