Field Hockey Falls in Double-Overtime

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Juniata scored in the second overtime period to defeat the Bridgewater College field hockey team 2-1, Sunday at Jopson Field.

Exactly 91 minutes into the contest, Juniata's Meredith Shephard was able to slip a pass past BC goalie Ali Bishop (nine saves) to teammate Grace Kuszmaul for the game-winner.

Elizabeth Washington got behind the Juniata defense early in the first overtime after Georgia Howard had led an Eagles counterattack, but JC goalie Kylie Edwards made a close-range blocker stop to keep the visitors alive.

Bridgewater had taken a first half lead on the game's second penalty corner. On what was nearly a broken play, Emily Matisons pushed a pass back to Washington. The Eagle junior put a slap shot up high into the cage with the extra help closing in behind her.

Juniata tied it in the second half, also on a corner. Rebecca Waite slipped a pass to Brittani LaFollette at the right post behind Bishop, who redirected it into the cage.

The visitors were given a penalty stroke after the first flurry of the game saw Bishop stop one jam attempt and defender Katie Ellis clear a shot from Lindsay Scholten off the line.

Scholten went low with her stroke and Bishop made the save to keep the game scoreless.

Juniata had four straight penalty corners later in the first half, with Bishop recording three saves during the stretch to keep JC at bay.

JC had another corner in the second half with a BC defender pulled out for jumping early, and Bishop made a blocker save to deny Waite.

Bridgewater had three straight corners late in regulation, with Edwards making a save on Shannon Strosser's slapper on the third attempt.

Bridgewater head coach Allyson Kenyon was facing her college coach, Caroline Gillich, from her time as a student-athlete at Juniata.

Bridgewater (8-5) returns to ODAC play on Wednesday down the road at Eastern Mennonite. Juniata is 6-8 on the year.
