HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman Emily Matisons scored the game-winner in the second half to break a 2-2 deadlock, as the Bridgewater College field hockey team defeated local rival EMU 3-2 on Wednesday.

EMU had kept it tied until the 58th minute despite Bridgewater holding a 27-15 edge in shots and a 15-4 edge in penalty corners.

The winner came on one of those corners with 12:08 remaining, as Matisons beat a defender and scored unassisted.

Bridgewater took the lead just five minutes in when Tessa Tierson intercepted a pass at the top of the circle and scored to get the visitors on the board.

EMU responded with a first half goal by Emily Augsburger, the younger sister of former Bridgewater All-American Caroline Augsburger.

It took just two minutes and seven seconds for Bridgewater to retake the lead, as Hannah Daley saved a shot and Madison Clement pounced on the rebound.

Daley made 14 saves for the Royals, including a number of good stops in the second half.

The Royals tied it soon after halftime on an Eagle giveaway that was finished off by Emily Price.

The Eagles had numerous chances to take back the lead before Matisons' goal, with Elizabeth Washington hitting the post and Augsburger making a defensive save on Marisa Sims.

Bridgewater senior Mackenzie Zabicki also came up big on the defensive end, clearing an Augsburger shot off the line that could have given EMU a surprise 3-2 second half lead.

Bridgewater improves to 9-5, 4-1 ODAC and will host Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday night for Homecoming.
