Roanoke College Pulls Away From Eagles

Box Score

SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College took control with a 19-3 first-half run and the Maroons pulled away to defeat Bridgewater College, 104-67, in ODAC action Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles, playing without three starters, were unable to keep pace with the high-scoring, run-and-gun Maroons.

Bridgewater (6-15, 5-9 in the ODAC) matched the Maroons for the first four minutes. Roanoke's Cameron Smith and Bridgewater's Brandon Walters traded 3-pointers to open the game before a layup by John Fitchett and two free throws by Carter Wright put the Maroons on top 7-3.

Logan Seacrist worked inside and converted a three-point play to pull the Eagles to within one, but Fitchett scored again, making the score 9-6. A layup by Eagles' big man Efe Balfour again pulled the Eagles to within one, 9-8, with 16:04 left in the half, but Roanoke outscored the Eagles 19-3 over the next six minutes to open up a 17-point lead.

A jumper and a 3-pointer by Fitchett followed by Seth Bradley's 3-ball gave Roanoke a 17-8 lead. Seacrist made 1-of-2 at the foul line, but another 3-pointer by Bradley made it 20-9.

Seacrist worked inside for a short jumper before an 8-0 spurt gave Roanoke a 28-11 lead. John Caldwell made two foul shots and Wright scored on a layup, making the score 24-11. Caldwell added a jumper and Smith capped the flurry with a layup, giving Roanoke a 17-point lead midway through the first half.

Roanoke (19-4, 11-3 in the ODAC) led 48-25 at the half and continued to pull away in the final 20 minutes to finish off the 104-67 victory.

DJ Caldwell hit 5-of-7 shots from 3-point range and led the Eagles with 19 points. Balfour scored 14 points, followed by Seacrist with 12 and Walters with 11.

Wright scored 19 points to lead four Roanoke players in double figures. The Maroons made 35-of-61 shots, including 16-of-33 from 3-point range.

Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles host Shenandoah.
