BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team went on an 11-1 run to blow the game open, defeating visiting Ramapo 19-7 on Tuesday.
Seniors Jenna Devilbiss (6 goals) and Caroline Fletcher (5 goals) combined for 11 goals on the day with each adding an assist as well. Claire Palermo-Re scored twice and had a game-high four assists.
BC goalie Rachel Gruber helped turn the game into a rout with 18 saves while allowing just seven goals, pushing her season save percentage to 54.2.
Bridgewater took a 10-5 lead into halftime after Fletcher scored with just one second remaining in the period.
Gruber made nine saves in the first half, including two stops on Emma Bolton early on. The Eagles countered and Kristen Stark hit Devilbiss, who assisted Fletcher to open the scoring.
Ramapo answered but Palermo-Re took a pass off the draw control and struck just 12 seconds later to make it 2-1 Bridgewater.
With the Eagles leading 4-1, Gruber stoned Alyssa Tachon and then made another stop on Lindsay Hughes in transition. At the other end Stark had an eight-meter chance after a Ramapo yellow card and hit a wide-open Fletcher with the pass to the back post.
Stark was making her first appearance of the season and Brittney Brown also marked her return from injury, providing a much-needed boost to an Eagles team that has been shorthanded early in the spring.
Freshman Sarah Yashinskie (who had a hat trick) roofed a free position shot for a 6-2 lead, but Ramapo responded with two straight goals to force a Bridgewater timeout.
After the timeout, Hughes and Bolton each hit the post with a chance to cut the deficit to one, before Devilbiss halted the momentum with a man-up goal and Brown later snuck an eight-meter shot off the post and just across the goalline.
Stark recorded her first career goal to kick off the second half. Fletcher hit Palermo-Re with a pass off a free position chance for a 13-5 lead, and then Palermo-Re did the same to Yashinskie to make it 15-5 and get the running clock going at Jopson Field.
Brown caused a turnover late in the game and found Yashinskie with a pass from the right sideline to make it 18-6 Bridgewater.
Bridgewater's final tally (scored by Devilbiss) was their fourth man-up goal of the contest as Ramapo was shown five yellow cards, whistled for 46 fouls, and had two players ejected for a second cardable offense.
Bridgewater (4-2) will open ODAC play on Sunday at home vs. Guilford, in what could be a crucial contest for ODAC playoff positioning. Ramapo falls to 1-3 on the year.
