Eagles Lose Second Straight One-Goal Heartbreaker

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team lost a one-goal heartbreaker for the second consecutive afternoon, falling 15-14 to Greensboro on Monday.

Twenty four hours earlier, the Eagles had taken a lead with under 12 minutes to go only to lose by one to an opponent from Greensboro, N.C., in a 13-12 ODAC defeat vs. Guilford.

The same thing happened today, as Natalie Ritchey tied the contest at 13-13 with 11:06 remaining and Kirstin Norris took the lead soon after.

Bridgewater had hit the crossbar in the final minute against Guilford and had deju vu in that area as well when Carolina Fletcher hit the pipe with three minutes to go. Alex Besch went the other way to score for a 15-13 lead, and the Eagles couldn't find another chance after Annie Sullivan's free position goal pulled them back within one.

Bridgewater was tied 9-9 in the final minute of the first half but went into halftime trailing by two after a pair of giveaways. An unforced turnover on the clear pulled Gruber out of the cage to challenge for the ground ball, leaving Ashlynn Parks to walk in all alone. A self-start violation after the ensuing draw led to another Parks goal with 00:02 left on the clock.

Claire Palermo-Re earned her 100th career point in the early going after chasing down a deflected Jenna Devilbiss shot and then feeding her senior teammate to make it 2-2.

Palermo-Re finished with six points on two goals and four assists, and was also instrumental in a four-goal Eagles run in the second half to retake the lead.

Devilbiss (four goals, one assist) got it going with an unassisted tally and then a difficult searching pass through a crowd to Fletcher to pull Bridgewater within one at 12-11. Palermo-Re then tied it and followed with a nice feed to Anna O'Hara for a 13-12 BC lead.

Devilbiss had completed a first half hat trick with a transition goal to make it 7-7. 28 seconds later the Eagles had the lead and another hat trick as freshman Kristen Stark struck on the counterattack.

Defensively Katie Ellis caused three turnovers for Bridgewater while Devilbiss and Erica Blubaugh had two CTs each.

Kirstin Norris, the nation's third-leading scorer, totaled six goals and two assists for Greensboro. Natalie Ritchey had three goals, two assists and four draw controls.

Bridgewater (4-4) will play a fourth straight home game on Friday vs. SUNY-Old Westbury. Greensboro improves to 6-3 on the year.
