BRIDGEWATER, Va. – BC goalie Rachel Gruber saved her first 11 shots on target and did not allow an even-strength goal as the Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team defeated SUNY-Old Westbury 14-2 on Friday.
Gruber finished with 14 saves and two ground balls. Jenna Devilbiss led the attack with four goals and two assists, while Caroline Fletcher and Kristen Stark each recorded first half hat tricks.
Gruber made eight saves in the first half while not allowing a goal. She made a stop that led to a Devilbiss goal through a crowd for a 3-0 Eagles lead. She followed that with a double-save on Danielle Weir after the Panther had picked up her own rebound right in front of the crease.
Devilbiss ripped in another high shot for a 5-0 lead, and made it 6-0 37 seconds later on a third unassisted tally.
Two failed clears had led to the first two Eagles goals. Sarah Yashinskie forced a caused turnover and fellow freshman Anna O'Hara picked up the ground ball. Devilbiss passed to Stark to get BC on the board.
Annie Sullivan then picked off a goaltender pass and went in all alone for a 2-0 advantage.
Devilbiss and Claire Palermo-Re forced pressure on a clear later in the first half, leading to another turnover by the goalie. Devilbiss passed to Palermo-Re, who hit Stark for an 8-0 lead.
Fletcher got the clock running with 9:50 left in the first half, making it 10-0 Eagles. Gruber made a great save late in the first half, stuffing Taylor Guarneri up high from point-blank range.
Gruber's 10th save of the game was on a tough free position chance by Westbury leading scorer Natasha Treuman. A close range stop on LaChaye Allen gave her 11 saves without a goal allowed.
Old Westbury finally got on the board following a Bridgewater yellow card, with Weir scoring man-up. The Panthers would record another power play goal late in the contest.
Bridgewater (5-4, 0-1 ODAC) will conclude a five-game homestand on March 30 against defending ODAC champion Washington & Lee. A year ago the Eagles played the then-11th ranked Generals to within a goal in Lexington, falling 9-8 despite having an eight-meter chance to tie in the final seconds.
SUNY-Old Westbury is 1-4 on the season.
