HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team kicked off its 2016 spring break trip with a 13-4 win over Massachusetts' Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Senior Jenna Devilbiss scored twice, won eight draw controls and also caused three first half turnovers for the Eagles. Junior Claire Palermo-Re had a hat trick.
Palermo-Re scored the game's first two goals, including the opener on a free-position shot, as the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead that was capped by Annie Sullivan's eight-meter tally with 16:09 on the clock.
The Eagles led 6-2 at the half when freshman Phoebe Hart scored her first two collegiate goals in the span of under two minutes. She opened the second half scoresheet with 20:58 left in the contest, then struck again after Leah Cummins had answered for Wentworth.
Classmate Sarah Yashinskie followed with her second of the day, and Palermo-Re completed the hat trick with 16:19 left for a 10-3 advantage.
Brooke Paradis pulled one back for Wentworth with 14:14 remaining but Bridgewater and goalie Rachel Gruber (six saves) would not concede again for the rest of the contest.
Yashinskie scored off an assist from fellow rookie Anna O'Hara, and Devilbiss finished off the scoring with a free-position shot in the final minutes.
Paradis had two ground balls and two draw controls for Wentworth in addition to her second half goal.
Bridgewater (3-1), who arrived in Hilton Head on Sunday, will play Muhlenberg College on Thursday before returning to campus the next day.
