Eagles Earn Split on Third Day in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Bridgewater College softball team split a doubleheader during its third day at the Rebel Spring Games by outlasting Husson, 10-7, and falling to Muskingum, 7-4, on Tuesday.

The win over Husson (1-5) was one of the Eagles most impressive victories so far in their young season. Husson is coming off its seventh straight North Atlantic Conference Championship and seventh consecutive NCAA DIII Regionals appearance last season. The team was also the preseason favorite to win its conference this year.

During the first game of the afternoon, Bridgewater (3-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Husson. With the bases loaded, senior Brooke Throckmorton reached on an error by the pitcher, which allowed freshman Lindsey Talley to put the first run on the board.

The Eagles held Husson scoreless until the top of the fourth. A RBI single from Casey Lopes evened the score and a double from Olivia Smith brought Gabrielle Bryant home for a 2-1 lead.

However, the Eagles responded with a four-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead. Shifflett notched two RBI behind a double to right field. And back-to-back singles from Talley and senior Brianna Cox drove in a couple of runs for a 5-2 advantage.

Each team exchanged two runs in the fifth, but the Eagles produced a three-run inning in the sixth to increase their lead to 10-4.

Cox ignited the scoring with an RBI single to right field. With the bases load, sophomore Mariah Wharton executed a bunt to bring home Hannah Nyquist and Mikalia Guard singled on the next at bat to drive in Throckmorton.

Husson then rallied to score three runs with two outs in the top of the seventh. Nonetheless, starter Amber Wood struck out Olivia Maynard to close out the contest.

Wood (W, 1-1) finished the day with nine hits, four earned runs, two strikeouts and two walks through seven innings of work. Talley was lights out at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Cox also posted two hits and two RBI.

Against Muskingum, Cox got the nod in the circle, ending the day with six hits, seven runs, seven walks and seven strikeouts. Junior Audra Koogler had two hits while freshman Emily Parks and Nyquist notched two RBI each.

The Eagles struck first in the second inning after Parks connected on a two-RBI single to go up 2-0. Muskingum quickly responded in the bottom of the second with three runs to take the lead. The Fighting Muskies scored each run on a wild pitch.

The Fighting Muskies tacked on three more runs in the third inning. Fallon Gawry reached first on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following two straight strike outs, Abigail Orr drew a walk and Amber Bova hit a single to bring home Gawry. On the next at bat, Dakota DeAmicis hit a two-RBI single to create a 6-2 affair.

Bridgewater closed the gap with two runs in the fourth. With runners in scoring position, a throwing error by Muskingum allowed Koogler and Guard to score.

Nonetheless, the Muskies added to their lead with another run in the bottom fourth and held the Eagles scoreless through the rest of the game.

The Eagles resume play in Florida on Thursday with matchups against Coe (9:00 a.m.) and Marietta (1:30 p.m.).
