Krider's Last-Minute Goal Lifts Eagles Past W&L

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Junior midfielder Isabella Krider scored in the final minute of play Saturday afternoon on a shot from 30 yards out to lift the Bridgewater College Eagles to a ley 3-2 ODAC victory over Washington and Lee.

The Eagles jumped all over the Generals early in the first half, scoring two goals in the opening 11 minutes with the ODAC's two leading scorers doing the damage for Bridgewater.

Bridgewater scored first with a play initiated in the Eagles' defensive end. Bridgewater had a throw-in from in front of the Eagles bench. Sarah Brennan's throw-in went to Krider who flicked a header ahead for Anna Sobus. Sobus raced past a defender to possess the ball and dribbled toward the box. Sobus made one touch to work free from the final defender and her shot beat goalkeeper Leeann Passaro to the far post, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead just 4:21 into the game. The goal was the 13th of the season for the ODAC's leading scorer.

Exactly six minutes later the Eagles struck again and once again a throw-in led to the goal. Brennan again took the throw and sent the ball into space near the corner for Krider. Krider crossed the ball near the top of the box where Sobus possessed and left it for Keri Rager. Rager took her shot from just outside the box and slotted the shot just inside the near post to put the Eagles up by two goals.

The Eagles maintained the two-goal lead for the remainder of the half, but the Generals opened the second half with immediate pressure on the Eagles back line.

W&L was awarded an early corner kick and took advantage of the set piece to get on the board. Emily Roche took the corner and sent her kick to the middle of the box just in front of the goal where Megan Engeland headed a shot past keeper Hayley Talbott to pull the Generals to within 2-1.

Bridgewater maintained its one-goal lead until the 82nd minute. Roche possessed the ball for W&L on the far side and switched the field when she lofted a high shot just inside the box. Caroline Peters tuuched the ball back toward the center of the box and Sydney Abrisz put a shot past Talbott to tie the score at 2-2.

The game was heading toward overtime when the Generals were whistled for a foul near midfield. Savannah Cowan took the free kick and sent a ball toward the top of the box that the Generals headed back toward midfiield. Grayson Mathews possessed the ball for the Eagles and sent a short pass ahead to Krider. Krider's shot from 30 yards out floated toward the upper 90 and just beyond the reach of Generals' keeper Passaro for the game-winning goal with just 55 seconds left on the game clock.

W&L finished with a 13-9 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Five of the Generals' corners came in the second half.

Talbott finished with three saves while Passaro recorded two saves for the Generals.

With the victory, Bridgewater improves to 13-3-1 overall. The Eagles and Generals are now both 6-2 in ODAC play, one game behind Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC standings.

The Eagles are back in action Wednesday evening when they make a road trip to play first-place Lynchburg. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
