Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Pitching was the name of the game Sunday as the Eagles split a twinbill with Ohio Northern. The Eagles came up on the short end of a pitcher's duel in the opener, 1-0, but won the second game in extra innings, 3-2.
In the opener, Ohio Northern scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leadoff batter Brandon Kasberg was hit by a pitch and Caleb Thomas followed with a single to right, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Kasberg scored on Jordan Bostater's ground ball to second for a 1-0 Polar Bears' lead.
Bridgewater's best opportunity to score came in the third inning. Jake Bailey led off the inning with a double and moved to third on Jacob Talley's groundout to the right side. Parker Mead walked to put runners on the corners, but Brandon Poole was retired on a fly ball to shallow center and Austin Batten grounded out to short to end the threat.
Devin Carr worked 6.1 innings to get the win for Ohio Northern. He allowed just four hits while striking out five and walking just one. Carr was lifted with two outs in the top of the seventh when Bailey reached on a single. T.J. Storer came out of the pen and retired Talley on a ground ball to record the final out of the game and earn the save.
Tristan Daywalt went the distance for the Eagles and took the loss. In six innings, he allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Bridgewater jumped out to an early lead in the second game with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Brandon Poole led off with a single and moved to third when Austin Batten reached on an infield error. Both runners came around to score on Chris King's single for a 2-0 Eagles' lead.
Eagles' lefty Jordan Showalter took a shutout into the sixth, but Ohio Northern put together three straight hits to tie the score. With two outs, Thomas was hit by a pitch to get the inning started. Bostater doubled to right, putting runners at second at third. Hayden Shenefield and Kyle Schlade followed with run-scoring singles to tie the score at 2-2. Jason Burkett walked to load the bases, but Showalter retired Adam Wilson on a pop-up to second to end the inning.
The Polar Bears threatened in the seventh when Dan Barna reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. A sacrifice bunt moved Barna to third, but he was unable to score on Brandon Kasberg's fly to center.Andrew Berry then came out of the bullpen and retired Thomas on another fly to center, keeping the game deadlocked at 2-2.
The scheduled seven-inning contest moved into extra innings with the Eagles pushing across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Chris King led off the winning rally with a single to right and moved to second on Jake Bailey's single to left. Both runners moved up on Jacob Talley's groundout and then JT Creed delivered a walk-off single to center, giving the Eagles the 3-2 victory.
Ryan Mason picked up the win on the mound as the sophomore right-hander worked a scoreless top of the ninth inning.
The Eagles, now 5-4 on the season, are back in action Monday when they play Thomas More.
