Eagles Lose 1-0 as Collyer Makes 13 Saves for McDaniel

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Despite a 23-3 shot disparity, the Bridgewater College field hockey team lost 1-0 to McDaniel on Sunday.

McDaniel goalie Elizabeth Collyer made 13 saves in the shutout win, with the Eagles also holding a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The winning goal came on a counterattack with 8:46 remaining, as McDaniel's Emily Houska tipped in Megan Quattrone's cross at the back post.

Bridgewater had the first chance of the game with 28:30 left in the first half, when Collyer made consecutive stops on Tessa Tierson and Emily Matisons.

Bridgewater earned the game's first penalty corner 13 minutes in. Elizabeth Washington tried to lift a shot over the goalie that went just wide. She would try the same thing on a corner late in the first half, again putting it just wide.

Collyer made another good save in the first half, coming off her line to deny Grace Stang.

McDaniel had their first corner with eight minutes remaining in the opening period, which was quickly broken up by Georgia Howard.

The Green Terror did not record a shot until 28 minutes into the game. Off a Bridgewater giveaway in the back, Eagle goalie Ali Bishop stuffed two close attempts by forward Gabrielle Yore.

Bridgewater had three straight corners 10 minutes into the second half, the final one ending with a save on Courtney Cooke.

With 22:30 remaining Bridgewater won another corner, with Collyer making two stops to prevent Cooke and Elizabeth Parker from getting BC on the board.

The chances kept coming for Bridgewater, with Parker's outside shot kicked away by Collyer minutes later. Collyer then made a great sliding save on Gaffney following a penalty corner.

Both Leah Beverly and Gaffney had chances near the left post within the final five minutes, but couldn't turn rebound chances into the cage.

Bridgewater (1-4) will be home again on Saturday, against Christopher Newport University.
