Box Score DANVILLE, VA. - The Bridgewater College Volleyball team fell to Averett in a non-conference competition Friday night. Bridgewater lost by a score of 3-1 (27-29, 25-23, 12-25, 23-25). The Eagles now sit 11-3 on the year while Averett is 12-2.
Rachel Gaston was Bridgewater's kills leader with 15 for the match. Carleigh Studtmann added seven kills while Macon Frey had 22 digs. Victoria Wilson led all players with 34 assists to go along with nine digs.
Hannah Shields did it all for the Cougars, racking up 18 kills and 21 digs.
In the first set, Bridgewater tied the score late in the set to make it 24-24 on a kill from Gaston. Back-and-fourth errors between the two teams were exchanged to keep the score close for the next few plays until Averett pulled away with the win on two service aces.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second set and held the lead on three consecutive points late in the set to take a 24-20 lead. Averett nearly battled back getting within 24-23 before Bridgewater got the kill again by Gaston to tie the match at 1-1.
Averett controlled the entire third set, which included a 5-0 rally at the end of the set to give them the win.
Bridgewater came back fighting in the fourth set. Studtmann brought the Eagles within one point on a kill to make it 22-21. Rachel Gaston tied up the score with a kill of her own three plays later, however the the Eagles couldn't finish and Averett scored the last two sets to win the match.
Bridgewater is back out on the court tomorrow for an ODAC match against Guilford beginning at 11:00 a.m.
