Eagles Make It Eight Straight With 2-0 Victory Over Salisbury

Box Score

- Bridgewater College ran its winning streak to eight straight with a 2-0 victory over Salisbury University on the Eagles' home field Sunday afternoon.

Since opening the season with a tie against Wooster and a loss to Carnegie Mellon, the Eagles have not lost.

Sunday, the Eagles tallied a goal in each half and the back line of Sarah Brennan, Annie Sible, Savannah Cowan and Maddie Grim along with keeper Hayley Talbott helped Bridgewater post its third straight shutout and its sixth shutout of the season.

Bridgewater jumped on top early with a barrage of shots against the Seagulls. Katherine Wight slotted a pass across the top of the box to the right side for an open shot from Anna Sobus. Salisbury keeper Hope Knussman made a diving save, but the rebound went back to Sobus for another open attempt from the right side. Knussman made another diving save and this time the ball bounced to the middle of the box where Bailey Kratz cleaned up the rebound by powering a shot from straightaway into the back of the net to put the Eagles on top 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the 64th minute when the Eagles picked up an important insurance goal. After a foul against Salisbury, the Eagles had a free kick from deep in their defensive end. Savannah Cowan played a long ball ahead to Catherine Haufe who got behind two defenders. Haufe split two defenders with a pass across the box and Bridget Fabiani beat the keeper with a low shot back to the far post to put the Eagles on top 2-0.

The Seagulls continued to battle and kept the pressure on the Bridgewater defense in the final 20 minutes. Salisbury took six of its 11 shots in the final 20 minutes and Bridgewater goalkeeper Talbott made three of her four saves during that stretch of play.

Salisbury finished with a slim 11-9 edge in shots and each team had two corner kicks.

The victory closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule as the Eagles prepare to take on the meat of the conference schedule in the coming weeks.

Bridgewater entered the season with the motto "Row The Boat" urging every team member to work together in keeping the boat moving forward in the right direction. The team appears to have taken the motto to heart as the Eagles have withstood several early-season injuries with a myriad of players logging key minutes during the first half of the season.

The Eagles will look to extend their winning streak this week with a pair of conference games on the slate. Bridgewater hosts Sweet Briar College on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Eagles then make the long road trip to Emory & Henry for a Saturday evening game. The start time is set for 6:00 p.m. against the Wasps.
