Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – MIT controlled the midfield and rode major contributions from their top players, as the Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team fell 17-13 to the Engineers on Monday.
The visitors from Boston held a 21-11 advantage in draw controls, 22-17 edge in ground balls, and forced eight Bridgewater failed clears. MIT got seven goals and two assists from Cecilia McCormick; four goals, three assists and nine draw controls from Emily Young; and three goals and eight draw controls from Katie Notarangelo.
Abby Houtz, Sarah Yashinskie and Dwyer Neal all had hat tricks for Bridgewater, with Neal adding an assist and four ground balls. Erica Blubaugh caused a game-high five turnovers.
Trailing 9-6 early in the second half, Houtz scored twice to pull the Eagles within one. She then had a chance to tie on the very next possession, but was stopped by Eva Boal (14 saves).
Bridgewater would get within a point once more on Anna O'Hara's tally with 9:54 to go, which MIT answered with two goals in the next 78 seconds.
Kayla O'Sullivan battled to win the ball away from Young on the game's opening draw, and Kristen Stark fed O'Hara to get the Eagles on the board first.
McCormick and Young teamed up for the first three MIT goals of the afternoon, giving the Engineers a 3-2 lead with 22:48 remaining in the first half and causing Bridgewater to take a timeout.
MIT led 5-2 midway through the first half, but Neal won the next draw control on an infraction and then scored two straight goals to get the Eagles within one. With nine minutes left in the first, MIT stretched the gap back out by striking twice in a span of 19 seconds.
MIT led 8-6 at the half after claiming 12 of 15 draw controls and forcing six BC failed clears in the opening 30 minutes.
Bridgewater is 5-2 and will host Mt. St. Vincent on Wednesday.
