Maroons Hold Off Bridgewater, 77-67

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Roanoke College used a 9-0 run just past the midway point of the second half to open a 62-51 lead and the Maroons went on to defeat Bridgewater, 77-67, in ODAC action Saturday afternoon at Nininger Hall.

The Eagles got off to a quick start, taking a 17-8 lead over the Maroons.

A 3-pointer by Dimetri Chambers gave the Eagles a 10-6 lead and a layup by Josh Cammon pushed the margin to 12-6.

Brandon Harrell scored for the Maroons before Davrion Grier scored inside and Cammon added a 3-pointer for a 17-8 lead with 14:04 left in the first half.

The Maroons responded with an 11-1 run to tie the score. Dillon Thomas and Tripp Greene hit 3-pointers to pull Roanoke to within four points and buckets by Josh Freund and Thomas tied the score at 18-18.

The score was tied again at 23-23 and 28-28 but Roanoke didn't lead until Caleb Jordan scored with 49 seconds left in the half to put the Maroons out front, 39-38.

Chandler Murray's 3-pointer put the Eagles back on top, but Brandon Harrell hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to send Roanoke to the break with a 42-41 lead.

A 3-pointer by Chambers put the Eagles up 48-46 with 15 minutes to play, but a short jumper by Freund tied the score at 48-48. A 3-pointer by Greene and a layup by Nick Price gave the Maroons a five-point lead, 53-48, with 13:10 left.

Bridgewater's Jimmie Sanders scored from long range to make it a two-point game before Roanoke put together the pivotal 9-0 run to open up an 11-point cushion, 62-51, with 8:18 remaining.

Bridgewater trimmed the deficit to six points, 71-65, on a 3-pointer by TJ Turner with 2:10 remaining, but the Eagles would get no closer down the stretch as the Maroons finished off the 77-67 victory.

Chambers led the Eagles with 18 points. Murray scored 15, followed by Grier with 11 and Cammon with 10.

Freund paced the Maroons with 24 points. Roanoke shot 56.9 percent from the floor in the victory.

The Eagles, now 7-7 and 2-3 in the ODAC, return to action Wednesday night when they make the long road trip to Virginia Wesleyan.
