Eagles Hand W&L First Loss Of The Season

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER. Va. - Bridgewater College celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Washington and Lee, handing the Generals their first loss of the season.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the eighth minute. Bridget Fabiani possessed the ball on the right side and sent a ball toward the near post. W&L keeper Grace Coombs was in position to make the easy save, but the ball went off her hands and trickled into the goal for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.

W&L (15-1-2. 8-1-1 in the ODAC) tied the score in the 23rd minute when the Eagles were whistled for a hand ball inside the box. Grace Wielechowski converted the penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1.

The Eagles regained the lead 10 minutes later. Sydney Ryan sent a ball ahead into space for Hunter Collier who was making a run down the right side. Collier was taken down in the box and Bridgewater was awarded a penalty kick. Hanna Randolph hit her shot low and just inside the post on her left to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.

W&L turned up the pressure on the Eagles in the second half, but the Bridgewater defense was up to the task.

The score remained 2-1 until the 79th minute when the Eagles took advantage of a corner kick opportunity. Randolph sent the corner into the middle of the box where Sydney Ryan headed the ball down and the shot bounced twice and snuck past the keeper to give the Eagles a two-goal lead, 3-1.

The Generals continued to attack and scored in the 87th minute to stay in contention. The Eagles were unable to clear a ball out of the box and W&L's Caitlin Barnes connected on a shot from 15 yards out to pull the visitors to within one, 3-2.

W&L continued to test the Eagles in the final three minutes, but the defense kept the visitors at bay to finish off the 3-2 victory.

The Generals held a 22-11 edge in total shots, including a 17-2 advantage in the second half. A majority of those shots were from distance and off target as Bridgewater keeper Sydney Davis was forced to make just six saves. W&L also held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Eagles finish the regular season with an 11-6-2 overall record and a 7-3 mark in the conference. The victory also gives the Eagles a chance of hosting a first-round game in the ODAC tournament, depending on the results from Saturday's other games. The ODAC tournament pairings will be announced following the completion of Saturday's games.
