Hornets Hold Off Eagles for 67-59 Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Lynchburg jumped out to a 13-0 lead to start the game and the Hornets held off the Bridgewater College Eagles in the second half to take a 67-59 victory over the Eagles Saturday at Nininger Hall.

Maggie Quarles scored the first five points for the Hornets and Abby Oguich added a layup for a quick 7-0 Lynchburg lead. Lizzie Davis scored inside and Quarles added two more buckets to make it 13-0 with 4:59 left in the first quarter.

Ahlia Moone drove inside to put the Eagles on the board, but Quarles added two foul shots for a 15-2 Hornets lead. Eagles' forward Erika Nettles hit a 3-pointer from the corner, but Davis answered with a layup to keep the Hornets up by double figures, 17-5.

The Eagles closed the gap with layups by Jasmyn Pierce and Kayla Darr, but Jayda Chambers hit a jumper to push the Lynchburg lead back to 10 points, 19-9. Pierce then knocked down a 3-pointer for the Eagles before Kate Kolb hit two foul shots in the final minute, giving the Hornets a 21-12 lead after one quarter.

A 3-pointer by Mary Ruth Shifflett pulled the Eagles to within six, 23-17, early in the second quarter, but the Hornets started to rebuild their lead and when Quarles hit two foul shots at the 1:37 mark, Lynchburg had its biggest lead of the half, 39-22. Another 3-pointer by Shifflett trimmed the defict to 13 points, 39-26 with 45 seconds left in the half. Lynchburg's Erin Green hit a short jumper with 20 seconds left, but the Eagles scored at the buzzer when Moone took a pass from Claire Mocarski and banked in a layup just before the horn to pull the Eagles to within 41-28 at the break.

Lynchburg led by 14 points early in the third quarter, but the Eagles began chipping away at the deficit and trailed by seven, 51-44, when Moone hit a 3-pointer with 2:35 left on the clock. A jumper by Quarles put the Hornets up by nine before a layup by Madison Baum and two foul shots by Makayla Johnson had the Eagles within five, 53-48. Oguich hit 1-of-2 foul shots with 14 seconds left to put the Hornets up 54-48 heading into the final quarter.

The Eagles would get no closer in the final 10 minutes as a 3-pointer by Davis gave the Hornets a nine-point lead, 57-48. Moone scored for the Eagles to trim the margin to seven points, 57-50, with 8:46 left, but Quarles converted a three-point play to make it 60-50 and Lynchburg maintained at least an eight-point lead the rest of the way.

Moone scored 20 points to lead the Eagles and first-year guards Shifflett and Pierce added 10 points each. Quarles finished with 21 to lead the Hornets.

Bridgewater, 13-10 overall and 12-4 in the ODAC, will look to snap its two-game losing streak Wednesday evening when the Eagles make the short trip to Harrisonburg to play rival Eastern Mennonite.
