Martin Homers Twice in Sweep of Nittany Lions

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team defeated Penn State Altoona 10-0 and 9-1 to start the season Saturday at Fulk Field. 

Game One: Bridgewater 10, Penn State Altoona 0

After a scoreless inning and a half, Stephanie Carroll put up the Eagles first run of the season crossing home thanks to an error by the visitors.  Later that inning, Katie Merhout would score on a Brooklynn Fridley RBI to make it 2-0.

The Eagles piled on seven runs in the third, starting with a Merhout RBI double to send Sarah Wimer home. The Nittany Lions walked the next two batters with the bases loaded to put Bridgewater up 5-0. With the bases still loaded, Kaitlyn Tirona hit a 2 RBI single as Katrina Martin and Avery Pinder scored. Wimer followed suit with an RBI of her own for two more Eagle runs making it 9-0 heading into the fourth.

Sydney Layman put the exclamation point on the opener with a home run on her first at bat of the season to make it 10-0. 

Seven Eagles had at least one hits while six had at least one RBI.

Brook Louden pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and no runs while throwing four strikeouts.  The senior also had two hits on three at-bats. 

Game Two: Bridgewater 9, Penn State Altoona 1

Martin started off game two in style with a 2 RBI home run to give the Eagles an early 2-0 advantage. Three batters later, Keirsten Kennedy hit a 2 RBI homer of own to put Bridgewater ahead 4-0 heading into the second inning. 

Martin wasn't done yet as she hit her second 2 RBI home run of the day on her next at-bat for a 6-0 Eagles lead.

Still in the second, Tirona hit a single and advanced to third on a Wimer double. Torie Shifflett sent Tirona home for an RBI and a 7-0 edge. Kennedy followed it up with another RBI single bringing Wimer across the plate for an 8-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions put up their only point of the day on a walked batter with the bases loaded. 

After a scoreless fifth inning, Tirona set up the game winning run on a lead-off single. She advanced to second after the initial play on a Nittany Lion error. Wimer finished it off with an RBI single to score Tirona and end the game in six innings and a score of 9-1.

Martin paced the Eagles three hits and four RBIs on two homeruns and a double. Tirona, Wimer and Kennedy all had two hits while Kennedy added three RBIs. 

Emily Clifford earned the win after throwing five innings and allowing two hits while picking up three strikeouts. Brantley Swift pitched the remaining inning, facing three batters and going 10-for-10 on pitches to strikes.

The Eagles are 2-0 to start the season, giving head coach Megan Pleskovic the first two wins of her head coaching career. Bridgewater has a quick turnaround and will face Mary Washington at home tomorrow, February 23. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
