SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team claimed a 10-9 overtime decision at Sewanee in a game that within a goal for all but six minutes of the contest.
Shannon Rogers scored on the opening possession of overtime, as the Eagles were first to a loose ball near the sideline and Jodie Welsh fed the Eagle senior for the game winner.
Each team had a two-goal advantage on a single occasion. Dwyer Neal and Allison Burris gave BC a quick 2-0 lead, but Sewanee pulled level with tallies from Sarah Strand and Grace Zechman.
Sewanee then took a 6-4 lead early in the second half on two Hattie Fogarty goals 20 seconds apart. That lasted just 32 seconds, with Jodie Welsh responding and Bridgewater then surging ahead on goals from Madeline Magill and Bridget O'Donnell.
Magill led the Eagles attack with four goals, while Rogers scored twice.
Mikaela Brooks made 10 saves and caused three turnovers, including picking off a pass in the final minute when Sewanee had a chance to score the go-ahead goal.
A tense closing minutes included a pair of Sewanee cards. On a yellow card with five minutes to go, Magill's free position shot was saved and the hosts scored shorthanded to make it 8-8.
Magill responded with a man-up goal to take back the lead. Fogarty tied it with 1:45 remaining, and the Eagles couldn't capitalize on a Sewanee green card with 28 seconds remaining, before cashing in after the overtime draw.
Bridgewater improves to 2-3 and will host Baldwin Wallace on Monday at 6 p.m.
