Big Third Quarter Sends Eagles Past Wasps

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College broke open a close game Tuesday night with a 13-0 run in the third quarter and rolled to an 80-64 victory over Emory & Henry in ODAC action.

The Eagles led by seven points, 38-31, at halftime and the margin was still seven, 42-35, with 6:33 left in the third quarter. Bridgewater then ran off 13 unanswered points to increase its lead to 20 points, 55-35, with 4:09 remaining on the third-quarter clock.

Jada Gross ignited the run with nine straight points. Gross converted a three-point play to put the Eagles up 10 before back-to-back 3-pointers by the first-year guard pushed the BC lead to 51-35. Taylor Stafford hit a short jumper and Katie Gaeth capped the run with a layup, making the score 55-35.

The Eagles padded the lead when a three-point play by Erika Nettles and a short jumper by Jaden Alsberry put the home team up by 23 points, 63-40, with 2:21 left in the third quarter.

The Wasps reeled off 10 straight points to trim the margin to 13, but Gross scored two buckets in the final 11 seconds of the quarter, giving Bridgewater a 67-50 advantage heading to the final quarter. Bridgewater outscored the Wasps 29-19 in the third quarter.

The Eagles maintained control of the contest in the fourth quarter as the Wasps could get no closer than 13 points in the final 10 minutes.

Gross had a huge game off the bench hitting 10-of-15 shots, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, to lead the Eagles with 26 points. The Eagles bench outscored the E&H bench 45-15.

Erica Nettles also had a big night making 8-of-10 shots, including 2-of-3 from long range, to tally a career-high 22 points.

BC first-year players made key contributions in the victory. In addition to Gross' 26-point outburst, Alsberry hit double figures for the first time in her young career with 11 points. She also led the team with eight rebounds. Gaeth added five points and three assists in 12 minutes of play.

Senior point guard Madison Baum dished out four assists to reach a career milestone with 400 career assists. She is the sixth player in program history to reach the mark.

Bridgewater's pressure defense forced 33 turnovers, including 21 steals. Ahlia Moone led the team with five steals and Taylor Stafford added four takeaways.

Josie Salyer led the visitors with 13 points, followed by Amaya Lee with 11 points and Alexis Hoppers with 10.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 9 when they will host Virginia Wesleyan.
