Eagles Stun Roanoke in Overtime

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Caroline Quigley converted on both of BC's scoring chances in the game, and Brooke Hamm and Claire Ashley combined for 24 saves, as the Bridgewater field hockey team shocked Roanoke in overtime.

Roanoke held a 19-2 advantage in penalty corners and a 34-3 gap in shot attempts. Those two BC corners both led to Quigley goals however, with the winner coming off a rebound after Karinne Moyer's initial shot was saved.

Quigley had tied it at 1-1 with 9:38 remaining in the game. A Courtney Cooke rush earned BC its first corner of the game; Cooke dribbled past several Maroons on the corner and Allison Thomson eventually slid a pass over to Quigley who lifted a shot in from the left side doorstep.

Hamm, who finished with 21 saves, made 15 first half stops while allowing just one goal, including 10 saves in a first quarter shutout.

She stopped consecutive chances from Emilee Wooten early in the contest, stacking the pads for a nice second save. Midway through the first she made another double save to deny Lauren Heffron and Martha Hurley.

Hamm then made a trio of saves on a penalty corner late in the first quarter. Ashley made a pair of defensive saves in the final minutes of the opening period to keep it scoreless.

It was unlucky #13 for BC in the second quarter as Roanoke opened the scoring on their 13th penalty corner, with Hamm sitting on 13 saves. Ashley had previously made her third defensive save of the half to stop Heffron on the goalline after the Roanoke forward had dribbled around Hamm.

The Eagle defense of Ashley, Thompson, Kelsey Hicks and Meredyth Rankin did a great job neutralizing Roanoke in the second half. The Maroons had just five shots on goal in the final 30 minutes of regulation and four of them came in the same fourth quarter flurry where Hamm denied four different RC players.

Bridgewater improves to 2-1, 2-1 ODAC and is tied for second place early in the 2020-21 season. The Eagles will travel to Ferrum on Friday. Roanoke is also 2-1, 2-1 on the year.
