Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee snapped a 0-0 halftime tie with two goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half and the Generals held on to defeat Bridgewater, 2-1, Saturday in a showdown for first place in the regular season standings.
With the victory, W&L earned the No. 1 seed for the ODAC tournament that will begin Tuesday. The loss was the first of the season for Bridgewater. The Eagles will be seeded No. 2 in the tournament and will host the No. 7 seed in Tuesday's quarterfinal round. First-round matchups and game times will be announced by the conference office.
Bridgewater (8-1. 5-1 in the ODAC) had a strong opportunity to score in the opening minute of the game. Skyler Daum's shot attempt was blocked, but Cyan Coates had a chance at the rebound. Her shot, however, was wide of the mark.
W&L broke the scoreless tie on a goal by Cameron Grainger in the 48th minute and a goal by her teammate Caitlin Barnes in the 61st minute made the score 2-0.
Following the Barnes' goal, the Eagles applied immediate pressure on the Generals' defense, but W&L keeper Grace Coombs turned away shots by Coates and Hanna Randolph.
The Eagles finally broke through in the 72nd minute on an unassisted goal by Alicia Keo to pull to within 2-1, but Bridgewater was unable to tally the equalizer in the closing minutes.
W&L held a 16-8 edge in total shots. Eagles' keeper Sydney Davis finished with seven saves. Bridgewater had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
