Box Score AMHERST, Va. - The Bridgewater College field hockey team dropped an overtime road matchup on Thursday, 2-1 at Sweet Briar.
After Bridgewater stopped several penalty corner chances at the end of regulation, Sweet Briar broke free down the left hand side in the first OT period, with Jolin Daughety finishing off the chance from close range.
The Vixens had taken the lead early. After Brynna Hughes created a dangerous chance down the right hand side, the hosts soon earned consecutive penalty corners and Ingrid Kalwitz converted on the latter opportunity.
Bridgewater created a series of scrambles off penalty corners later in the first quarter, including a deflection by Allison Thompson that was cleared away by a defender, but could not answer in the opening period.
The Eagles would convert on a penalty corner six minutes before halftime to even it up heading into the break. Emily Tyler deflected Caroline Quigley's shot into the cage from the middle of the goal area.
After Daphne Daymude had a rebound attempt in the opening minute of the third quarter, when Quigley's entry from outside the circle hit the post, neither side registered a shot attempt for the rest of the period.
Thompson started a dangerous break with 10 minutes remaining in the game, but Tyler's shot was blocked wide.
Bridgewater is 3-4 heading into a stretch where the Eagles will play five of seven at home. Sweet Briar, who joined the CSAC for field hockey after competing in the ODAC through last season, improves to 5-1 on the year.
