Women's Basketball Takes Care of Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bridgewater College women's basketball team defeated Meredith, 61-49, on the road on Saturday.

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 61, Meredith 49
Records: Bridgewater 8-1, Meredith 1-6

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater opened the contest crashing the offensive glass. India Dailey grabbed an offensive rebound for BC and Riley Corcoran drove in and made a layup to give the Eagles the first bucket of the contest. Reagan Maynard found Jaden Alsberry in the post and the Strasburg, Va. native laid it in for a 4-0 Eagle advantage. Meredith responded quickly with a layup of their own, but Corocoran would get a steal and go coast-to-coast for an easy two to keep BC ahead by four.
  • The Avenging Angels took a brief 8-6 advantage in the closing stages of the first quarter, but Jasmyn Pierce found Rosemary Pierson open in the perimeter and she buried the three-pointer to put the Eagles back in front. On the very next possession Pierson got a steal and took it the length of the court for the easy layup to give Bridgewater an 11-8 lead after the first frame.
  • Pierson continued the second quarter with the hot hand. Meredith opened the frame with the opening bucket, but the sophomore found Erika Nettles in the paint for a layup. The Avenging Angels took the lead back after a quick 5-0 run before Dailey found Maynard on the edge for another three-pointer to give the Eagles the lead back. The two squads traded baskets for the majority of the second quarter until BC put together a 5-0 run to end the half after Dailey knocked down a jumper from beyond the arc and Corcoran sank a pair from the charity stripe to make it a 27-21 lead for Bridgewater at the intermission.
  • The Eagles opened the third quarter on an 11-4 run. Alsberry led the charge with six points over the opening three minutes as BC was 5/7 from the floor to start the second half. Bridgewater stretched the advantage to as much as 11 points in the frame as the offense and the defense both turned up. The defense held Meredith with out a made basket for over two minutes three separate times during the quarter leading to a 47-34 Bridgewater lead after 30 minutes of play.
  • The home standing Avenging Angels opened the fourth quarter knocking down their first four attempts from the field to chip the BC lead down to just eight points with 6:53 to play. BC responded quickly with quick back-to-back layups from Alsberry and Abby Freeman to stretch the lead back to double digits at 55-43. The final five minutes saw both teams only make five combined field goals, but the Eagles were able to ice the game away with free throws down the stretch.
Match Notes
  • Maynard and Alsberry each totaled a team high 12 points. The pair also grabbed four rebounds apiece. Maynard scored all of her points from long range and is the first Eagles to knock down four three-pointers in a game since Pierson did it against Roanoke a year ago.
  • Kate Perko scored a game high 20 points for Meredith and racked up a double-double with 11 rebounds for the Avenging Angels.
  • Nettles led the BC attack on the glass with nine rebounds. Pierson notched a game high five assists in the win.
  • Bridgewater held a 33-25 edge in rebounds and was able to outshoot Meredith from the field including a 31.8% clip from long range.
  • The Eagles enter the holiday break at 8-1. This is the best record at the break for the program since the 2010-11 season where the team carried a perfect 8-0 record into January.
  • The win marks the 350th victory in head coach Stephanie Flamini's career.
