Eagles Suffer Road Loss at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's basketball lost to Randolph-Macon for the second time in two days, this time a 53-40 decision in Ashland.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 40, Randolph-Macon 53
  • Records: Bridgewater (9-13, 6-9), Randolph-Macon (15-6, 13-2 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles struck first two minutes into the game on an Erika Nettles layup to take an early 2-0 lead. The Yellow-Jackets then went on a 9-0 run to take a six point edge with five minutes left in the quarter. Bridgewater's remaining points in the frame all came from successful trips to the charity stripe as the Eagles entered the second quarter down 15-9
  • Bridgewater grabbed 17 rebounds in the second quarter but struggled offensively, shooting just 17.4% from the field. The teams traded baskets with under thirty seconds to go to end the half 30-18 in favor of Randolph-Macon
  • Randolph-Macon took their largest lead of the game at 40-20 five minutes into the third quarter. Baskets from Julia Williams and Melanie Pick along with strong defensive play by Jaden Alsberry cut the lead to 14. After a two minute scoring drought, Williams sank two free throws to end the third frame as R-MC still lead 42-26
  • Bridgewater shot 42.9% from the field in the fourth and snagged seven steals paced by two each from Williams and Diamond Huskey. The Eagles never stopped fighting, grabbing three offensive rebounds in the final minute of play that led to two made free throws by Huskey to end the game

Match Notes

  • Nettles led Bridgewater with eight points, five rebounds and two steals followed by Huskey with seven points and four rebounds off the bench
  • Williams added six points, four rebounds and four steals while Pick had five rebounds 
  • The Eagles could not find their rhythm from behind the arc, going 0-16
  • Each team had their share of offensive rebounds with R-MC grabbing 16 and the Eagles 15

Up Next

  • The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, February 16 when they make the short trip to crosstown rival Eastern Mennonite. Action is set for 7:00 p.m.
