Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's soccer team dropped its season opener to Southern Virginia, 2-1, on Thursday evening.

How It Happened
  • The first half went scoreless but not with out chances. Bridgewater dominated the shots and pace of play in the opening frame outshooting the Knights 9-2 without allowing a shot on goal
  • Ten minutes into the second half, SVU had an opportunity with it's second corner kick in under a minute. The initial cross towards the box was deflected out by Hanna Randolph and Maren Dougherty. Lindsey Clausen gathered the loose change and found the back of the net to put SVU on top 1-0.
  • In the 70th minute, the Knights had an opportunity to extend their lead. Rachel Bodkin carried the ball through for SVU and tried to rifle off a shot that was deflected by a slide from Dougherty. As the ball sailed wide of the net Dougherty was awarded a yellow card and a penalty kick was given to Bodkin who buried it to give SVU a 2-0 lead.
  • Bridgewater continued to have chances, especially late when Coach Van Horn re-entered his top attacking unit of Kaia Richardson, Ashley Sabatino and Skyler Daum.
  • In the 84th minute BC had multiple chances including a Katelyn Seagraves header that went wide. Off of the ensuing goal kick the Eagles would work the ball around. Maddie Crooks sent a cross that got deflected back out to Kendall Garza who found Sabatino. Sabatino booted one headed for the post that deflected off of the cleat of Richardson and in to put BC on the board, down 2-1
  • In the closing five minutes the Eagles had opportunities trying to control the tempo including a Dougherty shot off of a throw in te SVU defense held serve to take close out the game.
Match Notes
  • Carlee Gaboury added a save in the three shots she faced all night as the Bridgewater back line limited the SVU offense
  • Alyssa Trueman made seven saves for the Knights only allowing one goal. 
  • BC led the game in shots (20), shots on goal (8) and corner kicks (6).
  • Richardson recorded her first goal since the spring 2021 season after missing much of last season due to injury.
  • Gaboury got her first career start in goal for the Eagles and also recorded her first collegiate save.
