Eagles Take First ODAC Win Over Quakers

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team picked up its first ODAC win of the season 3-2 over Guilford on Wednesday.

How It Happened
  • Out of the gate Guilford applied early pressure resulting in the first scoring chance of the game as Ryan Doyle fired a shot that Charles Schweinefuss dove to his left and grabbed with both hands to make the stop.
  • Bridgewater's first scoring chance found the back of the net in the 11th minute. The Eagles made a run that Trevon Phillips took to the edge of the box and laid a pass on to Matthew Shelor who faked right and went to his left and found the back of the net to make it 1-0 BC early.
  • The Eagles added two more shots on net in the next ten minutes but both were saved by Roman Robinson. The next shot on net came from an opportunity set up by Shelor as his pass found Lestath Savage who fired a shot to the back of the net to make it 2-0 in te 28th minute.
  • In the closing stages of the first half, Savage struck again. This time Garcia laid a pass on for the sophomore who found the back of the net for the second time to make it 3-0 headed into the break.
  • In the 62nd minute the Quakers had a big chance. Guilford set up just beyond the box with a free kick. Logan Eure set up to take it and did all of the work himself as his shot cleared the wall of defenders and bent its way into the net to cut the lead to 3-1.
  • Guilford was still fighting in the 84th minute as Jeremy Pless made the long throw from the sideline that Jasper Ardinger volleyed into the box and past Schweinefuss to make it 3-2.
Match Notes
  • Savage scrored twice for BC while Shelor added a goal and an assist. Garcia picks up his first career point with an assist as well.
  • Guilford totaled four total shots from four different players. BC totaled 13 as Savage led all players with three. 
  • Schweinefuss made one save in the win for Bridgewater. Ildis Vital-Peraza came off of the bench for the Quakers and made three saves.
  • Corner kicks were dead even at seven each while Bridgewater held a 8-3 advantage in shots on net.
  • Savage scored two goals in a game for the second time this season bringing his season total to four goals.

Bridgewater returns to action on Saturday Oct. 1 against Ferrum at 3 p.m. This will also be senior day for the men's soccer team as they will honor their senior members during halftime.
