Eagles Split on Final Day of Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Bridgewater College volleyball team battled back from down 2-0 to pull off a 3-2 victory against Penn State Altoona on the final day of the Battlefield Classic on Saturday.

Following the five-set thriller that nearly surpassed three hours, Bridgewater fell to Salisbury in straight sets, 3-0.

Against the Lions, BC faltered in the first two sets by a 28-26 and 26-24 count. The Eagles took the third set, 25-20, as the tides started to turn in their favor. The fourth set was nearly all Bridgewater as it walked away with a 25-9 set win before closing out the contest, 15-13, in the final set. 

For the match, Faith DePew led the game with 21 kills on a .321 hitting percentage and also recorded 13 digs to go with five service aces. For her efforts in the match and across the two-day invitational, she was named to the all-tournament team. 

Lauren Nofsinger and Kylie Robinson each finished with 11 kills, while Sarah Kerns pitched in 10 kills of her own. Ashley Rutherford was the leading setter against Penn State Altoona with 36 assists, while Grace Hayes tallied 16 helpers of her own. Sophia Stites, who wore the libero shirt, led the team with 26 digs. Madeline Walker recorded 14 digs and Emma Anderson finished with 11. In addition, Rachael Meyers recorded three block assists in the win.

Salisbury took the match against the Eagles in straight sets, 25-13, 25-21, 25-15. Statistics for the contest are not yet available.

The Eagles return to action as they open their home slate on Tuesday, Sept. 6, against Hollins at 6 pm.
