Bridgewater Men Fall at Hampden-Sydney

FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's basketball team fell to Hampden-Sydney, which received votes in the latest national rankings, by a 80-63 count, in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers scored the game's first basket right before Alex Topper hit on a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead at 18:44 in the first half. The two sides traded scores in the early goings, but H-SC went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to pull ahead by a 12-5 count.
  • The Eagles struck back with a run of their own to make it a one-point game at 12-11 after a layup by Joseph Crenshaw with 12:01 on the clock. The next five points went the way of the home team, but a triple from Aaron Oates kept BC in the game at 17-14. Hampden-Sydney worked out an 11 point lead after a three from Adam Brazil set the score at 27-16 as the two sides exchanged baskets for the next several minutes. The Tigers led by as many as 17 points as the Eagles trailed at halftime, 42-28. 
  • BC kicked off the second half with a 14-6 stretch over the first five minutes to cut into the Tigers' lead and knocking the lead down to six points at 48-42 after a three-point play by Shod Smith. After back-to-back scored by the home team, the Eagles inched the lead back down to seven after a three-point play the old fashioned way by Oates, 52-45, with 12:30 left in regulation. 
  • Liam Caswell drilled a trey to keep BC in the game at 54-48, but Hampden-Sydney came back with a 10-4 run to go ahead by 12 points with under seven minutes left on the clock. Both teams traded scores for the remaining of the contest as the home side held on for an 80-63 win.
MATCH FACTS
  • Topper led the Eagles with 16 points with 15 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Smith and Oates each finished with 13 points as Oates pulled down six boards and Smith registered a pair of assists, two steals and grabbed two rebounds.
  • Caswell hit a trio of three-pointers on his way to a 12-point day, as well.
  • Davidson Hubbard finished with a game-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Josiah Hardy, Ryan Clements and DJ Wright all recorded 14 points in the win. '
  • The Tigers held a 50-35 edge in rebounding and saw 44 of their points come in the paint compared to 20 from Bridgewater.

Bridgewater heads to Ashland on Wednesday, Jan. 18, as it travels to face the defending national champions in No. 2 Randolph-Macon. Tip is set for 7 pm.
