Men's Basketball Falls to Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's basketball team came up just short against Washington and Lee on the road Wednesday night 87-82.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Washington and Lee 87, Bridgewater 82
Records: Bridgewater 9-9, 4-5 ODAC; Washington and Lee 14-6, 7-4 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded buckets to open the contest, but an Aaron Oates three-pointer just under 90 seconds in gave the Eagles a small 5-2 lead in the early going. After the quick BC lead the Generals went on a 12-0 run led by six from Robert DiSibio. A bucket from Joseph Crenshaw stopped the bleeding momentarily but the Generals continued to stretch their lead out to as much as 24-9 midway through the opening stanza.
  • Crenshaw got the Eagles back on the board again and sparked a quick 11-0 run capped off by a jumper from Landon Hawes to get the Eagles to within four. A bucket and a timeout by the home squad attempted to stop the Eagle momentum, but a triple from Connor Ballou closed BC to within a basket, 26-23. The squads traded baskets down the stretch and a long ball from Alec Topper pushed the Eagles to within one with two minutes and change left in the opening frame. After a WLU miss and a Topper board the BC offense went to work and Shod Smith found Topper again for a triple, giving BC the lead after trailing by as much as 15; however, a triple from the Generals in the closing seconds gave them a 40-39 advantage headed to the locker room.
  • Washington and Lee opened the half with a layup off the glass and in to stretch their lead to three, but on the other end Liam Caswell knocked down a three-pointer to knot the game early in the second half. Much like the opening period, the Generals controlled the pace and held BC without a field goal for nearly three minutes and stretched out a 12-2 run. A Topper layup ended the drought, but the Generals added eight more to stretch their lead to 14 points with 11 minutes to play.
  • With BC looking for another answer, Crenshaw was there. The Culpepper native drilled a triple from the corner to stop the Generals' run momentarily. WLU responded with four more unanswered until Smith knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to make it a 66-53 game. Needing another big basket, Hawes answered for BC. A long ball and a turnaround jumper from the sophomore sparked a 10-0 stretch for Bridgewater finished off by a layup from Andy Pack to make it just a two-possession contest with six minutes to play.
  • The home side quickly answered after the Pack bucket, but Hawes nailed another crunch time basket to make it 70-65. Hawes grabbed a rebound on the defensive end on the next possession and attempted to go the length of the floor and was fouled. A technical foul was also awarded to the Generals following the play leading to four straight BC foul shots. Topper and Hawes nailed two each to close it to a one-point game. The two sides traded trips to the charity stripe but a triple from Sam Wise gave the home side a 78-71 advantage with just two minutes to play. Two more WLU free throws extended the lead back to nine points before Hawes nailed another long ball to keep the Eagles in the contest. The Eagles slowly chipped away, but clutch free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the deal for Washington and Lee.
