DANVILLE, Va. -- The Bridgewater College football team forced six turnovers on its way to a 53-24 win against Averett in ODAC action at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles rebound after a loss against Randolph-Macon a week ago and move to 5-2 on the season with a 3-1 record in ODAC play. The Cougars fall below .500 to 3-4 with an 0-4 mark in league games. Averett has now lost four straight games since beginning the season 3-0.
Bridgewater got on the board first with a 16-yard touchdown run by
Kennedy Fauntleroy on a drive that covered 60 yards in less than two minutes to give BC a 7-0lead with 12:16 left in the first.
An
Amari Presley interception gave the Eagles the ball back deep inside Cougar territory and allowed Fauntleroy to scamper in from seven yards out to double the lead to 14-0 less than five minutes into the game.
A misplayed punt allowed the Cougars to maintain possession after initially punting away that led to Shyheim Watlington falling in from four yards out to get AU on the board, 14-7, with just under eight minutes left in the opening quarter.
A seven-play drive from Bridgewater saw it come to a close with a
Freddie Watkins touchdown and a two-point conversion to set the score at 22-7.
The Cougars put together a 10-play, 74-yard drive that took almost five minutes off the clock, but had to settle for a 26-yard field goal from Will Caviness as the Eagles led 22-10 with 13:46 left in the first half.
The Eagles responded with a field goal of their own after marching 58 yards down field as
Jack Hendren was good from 32 yards out, 25-10.
On the following drive after the field goal,
Xavier Edelen got his hands on a pass and ran back for a 30-yard pick-six to increase the lead to 32-10 after the PAT was good. The same score held until halftime.
The Eagles started the second half with a bang as
Brendan Robinson sprinted for a 68-yard touchdown run, 39-10, just under two minutes into the third quarter.
The Cougars were able to put a drive together later in the quarter as Isaiah Lytton found the end zone after a pass from Bryce Jackson to cut the lead down to 39-17 with 6:45 on the third-quarter clock.
Following an interception from
Aaron Moore, Robinson found the end zone for a second time on a seven-yard scoring run that followed a big drive from Fauntleroy who began the series with a 37-yard run to get into the red zone. The Eagles went ahead 46-17 with still two minutes to go in the third quarter.
Moore stepped up again on the following series as he picked up a fumble and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown to make the score 53-17.
Averett found the end zone once more in the contest as Dennis Mingledoff ran it in from four yards out to get to the final score of 53-24.
Jaicere Bateman got a majority of the reps for the Eagles as he tossed for 170 yards on 13 completions.
Jaylen Wood also went 5-for-7 for 54 yards. For Averett, Jackson threw four interceptions and was held to just 12 completions on 36 attempts for 137 yards.
Fauntleroy led the game with 113 yards rushing on 16 carries with two touchdowns, while Robinson pitched in 97 yards on just seven carries and two scores. Brady Loder carried the ball seven times for 20 yards, while Watkins had two carries for two yards and a touchdown.
Montez Green finished with six catches for 75 yards, while
Cedric Drumgoole hauled in three balls for 54 yards.
Keaton Ellis had a 23-yard catch, while Loder and
Jamel Johnson each had a pair of catches.
Defensively,
Samuel Adkins had a team-high 10 tackles (eight solo) with 2.0 TFL, while
TJ Lowery finished with six stops.
Moore finished with five solo tackles to go along with his interception and his 26-yard scoop-and-score.
Aaron Nice had three tackles with 1.0 TFL with a fumble recovery that was taken 16 yards and also a interception that was returned 28 yards. Presley had an interception and two tackles, while Edelen had the sixth turnover for the Eagles' defense that went for a touchdown.
Trey Trenary recorded the final TFL for Bridgewater, as well.
Bridgewater ran for 213 yards on the ground compared to 100 for the Cougars. The Eagles also outpassed AU 224-190. BC won the time of possession game 34:37 to 25:23 and held Averett to just 3-of-15 on 3rd Down Conversions.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday, October 28 for Homecoming as it hosts Ferrum at 2 pm at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
