Two Goals From Dunbar Push Eagles Past EMU

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's soccer got back in the win column in a dominant 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite.

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Eastern Mennonite 0
Records: Bridgewater 5-2-4 (1-2-2 ODAC), Eastern Mennonite 5-3-3 (2-1-2 ODAC)

How it Happened
  • Bridgewater set the tone from the opening minute as Riley Queen made a run up the near side and fired a shot on goal that was scooped up by Andrew Arledge for EMU. Cole Dunbar had a chance early as he fired a shot but missed high. Eastern Mennonite finally got their first offensive chance in the eighth minute as Simon Yoder fired a shot wide of the net. Yoder found the target five minutes later and Charles Schweinefuss made the stop,
  • The Eagles kept the pressure going with chance after chance and could not break the seal and get to the back of the net. Finally, it paid off as Alex Dierkens found Cole Dunbar in the box and the sophomore buried it in the lower left side to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage with just over a minute left in the opening half of play.
  • BC continued its stay in the EMU offensive end as Niklas Hatchett and Anthony Medrano each fired a shot in the opening three minutes of the second half, but a defensive save and a deflection stifled the chances. After an EMU yellow card in the 54th minute the Eagles had a serious chance from 20 yards out. Gavin Kast had his initial ball in blocked but Medrano and Queen each had shots blocked up front by EMU in the seconds that followed. After the failed clear that followed Ali Malik fought for possession and earned it just inside the box and fired a shot to the near post and in to give the Eagles a 2-0 edge with just under 35 minutes to go.
  • Queen had another chance as a one touch pass left him a wide open goal, but the freshman skied the shot over the crossbar. A failed clear by EMU once again left the Eagles with an opportunity. This time Medrano flicked a pass on to Dunbar and the sophomore found the back of the net for the second time on the day to make it 3-0 with 25 minutes to play.
  • Eastern Mennonite had its first true offensive chance following the goal as they adjusted in the attack. After a save from Schweinefuss BC flipped the field and went on the attack and John Meier had a chance but clanked it off the cross bar in the last offensive chance for either side.

Match Notes
  • Dunbar found the back of the net twice to make it three goals in the last two games. Malik's score is his first collegiate goal of his career and the first in the U.S. for the Canadian.
  • Queen led all players with five shots while Dunbar was the only player on either side to put multiple shots on goal.
  • Schweinefuss made five stops on the day and controlled much of the pace of the game defensively for the Eagles ion the way to the shutout.
  • BC led all of the offensive categories including a 23-10 advantage in shots.
